Children’s Sermon November 17, 2024/ Twenty-Sixth Sunday of Pentecost/ Lectionary Year B

Scripture

Mark 13:1-8

Script

Pastor: Good morning boys and girls! Welcome! Let’s say good morning to our friend Sammy and see if she is there. Ready? One, two, three: Good morning, Sammy!

Sammy: [In a sad tone.] Good morning, everyone. Hey Pastor, I have some bad news to tell you.

Pastor: What’s that, Sammy?

Sammy: Well, this morning when I woke up, someone tore off the door to the barn. And all the baby animals got out. All the chicks, lambs, foals, calves, and kids were all outside the barn. I don’t know what happened to the door—it was in pieces in the pasture!

Pastor: Oh no, Sammy! That’s terrible. What did Farmer Mark say?

Sammy: Farmer Mark was sad. He had to gather up all of the baby animals. And he still doesn’t have a door on the barn. I saw him in his workshop. He was making a new door.

Pastor: That sounds like a bad thing that happened. Boys and girls, is there a time when sometime bad happened to you? Would you like to share?

[Allow time for responses]

Pastor: I remember when something bad happened to me…

Sammy: That sounds like a bad time, Pastor.

Pastor: It was a bad time, but you know what? I wasn’t scared.

Sammy: Why not, Pastor?

Pastor: I have Jesus in my heart. I used the light of Jesus to lead me out of my struggle.

Sammy: Can I buy the light of Jesus on Amazon?

Pastor: No, you can’t. It’s only given to those who have faith and are baptized.

Sammy: So I ALREADY have the light of Jesus?

Pastor: That’s right, Sammy, you do. All of us do. Remember, if you are having a hard time, you can always call on Jesus to help you. Let’s try that. At the count of three, can you say Jesus as loud as you can? Ready? 1, 2, 3: JESUS!

Sammy: 1, 2, 3: JESUS!

Pastor: Never forget you can always call on the name of Jesus. Let’s pray. Can everyone please fold their hands and bow their heads? Dear Jesus, Thank you for guiding us in times when we struggle. Thank you for being our light. We love you. Amen.

Sammy: Bye, everyone!

Pastor: Bye, Sammy!

Lessons and Hymn Suggestions

Advent-Transfiguration of Our Lord, Cycle C

December 1, 2024 – March 2, 2025

NOTE: LBW – Lutheran Book of Worship (The Green Book)

WOV – With One Voice (The Blue Book)

ELW – Evangelical Lutheran Worship (The Cranberry Book)

LSB – Lutheran Service Book (The Maroon Book)

There are versions of some hymns that are superior in LSB and I recommend using them if possible. Also, there are some superb hymns in LSB that aren’t available in the other hymnals. When I suggest one of the latter, I try to include an alternative from LBW or WOV. I recommend that a license and DVD of downloadable hymns from LSB be purchased if you are looking to expand your hymnody. There are, in ELW, some familiar hymns that have been drastically altered, which I try to note. ELW also has some fine hymns not available in the other hymnals, or has, interestingly, a more “traditional” translation or harmonization.

Color for the day is indicated for each Sunday. Primary liturgical calendar taken from Sola Publishing (www.solapublishing.org), based on LSB. Also, I include the lessons from the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) found in ELW and used in some congregations. It often overlaps the Sola/LCMS calendar lectionary, but when there are differences, I will note them.

Because some of the prayers of confession, as well as offertory and post-communion prayers, provided on certain resource pages lack theological heft or linguistic elegance, I have added some seasonal prayers that you are free to cut, paste, and revise as needed. They are modified from the copyright-free Online Book of Common Prayer, or are my own creation. These are found on the following pages. The regular prayers of intercession will, as usual, be provided weekly in their own Word documents.

A Brief Order of Confession and Holy Absolution for Advent

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son+, and of the Holy Spirit: Amen.

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Silence may be kept.

Most merciful God, I confess to you with my whole heart my neglect and forgetfulness of your commandments: my wrong thinking, speaking, and acting; the hurts I have done to others; and the good I have left undone.  O God, forgive me, for I have sinned against you. Raise me to newness of life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Hear this promise of Almighty God: He prepares in our hearts a royal highway for his Son’s near approach, and cleanses us from all our sins. He drives away the darkness of sin and death, that we may behold the glory of his Son, the Word made flesh, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Spoken Gospel Acclamation for Advent

Alleluia. Come and save us, LORD our God. Let your face shine upon us, that we may be saved. Alleluia.

Offertory Prayer for Advent

Holy God, receive these tokens of our love for you. Make them holy, and use them as you desire, for the glory of your coming Kingdom, and for the well-being of the people you long to redeem. This we ask in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Post-Communion Prayer for Advent

Almighty and ever-living God, we give you thanks for these heavenly gifts.  Kindle in us the fire of your Spirit. When your Christ comes again, make us shine as lights before his face; who is alive and reigns now and forever. Amen.

Sending Words for Advent

Go in peace. Prepare the way of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

A Brief Order of Confession and Holy Absolution for Christmastide

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son+, and of the Holy Spirit: Amen.

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Silence may be kept.

Most merciful Father, we confess that we walk in the darkness of sin and not in your light. Sometimes we treat the priceless gift of your Son as an afterthought. We do not share the gifts of forgiveness, mercy, and care with those who need them from us. Lead us into the light of your love. Restore to us the joy proclaimed by angels and shepherds at your Son’s birth among us. Amen.

Behold, I bring you glad tidings of great joy: For unto you is born a Savior who is Christ the Lord.  His name is Jesus, for he saves us from our sins. He is called Emmanuel, for he is God with us. For his sake, his Father forgives and blesses you, calls you his children, and bestows his Holy Spirit to guide, strengthen, and sanctify you in all your words and deeds. Amen.

Spoken Gospel Acclamation for Christmastide

Alleluia. The Word of God became flesh and dwelt among us. To those who accepted him he gave power to become the children of God. Alleluia.

Offertory Prayer for Christmastide

Heavenly Father, receive, bless, and use these gifts, given for love Jesus Christ, your gift to us, your Son, our Savior, and our Lord. Amen.

Post-Communion Prayer for Christmastide

Heavenly Father, we thank you for your great gift of love, your Son Jesus Christ. May we who have received his body and blood bear the light of his love into the world, to your glory and for the healing of the nations. Amen.

Sending Words for Christmastide

Go in peace. Christ is born. Thanks be to God.

A Brief Order of Confession and Holy Absolution for the Epiphany Season

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son+, and of the Holy Spirit: Amen.

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Silence may be kept.

Most merciful Father, in Christ our light has come. But sometimes we prefer the darkness of sin. We do not let your light shine in our lives so others may see our good works and glorify you. We are deeply sorry and humbly repent. Forgive us and fill us with your Spirit. Give us the joy of your salvation. Send us out to proclaim your salvation, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Arise, shine, for your Light has come; and the glorious mercy of the Lord shines round about you. In the name of and by the authority of our Savior Jesus Christ, I announce the forgiveness of your sin. May the Holy Spirit strengthen your faith, heal your spirit, and equip you to proclaim the greatness of the Lord until he comes in glory. Amen.

Spoken Gospel Acclamation for the Epiphany Season

Alleluia. Glory to you, O Christ, proclaimed to the Gentiles. Glory to you, O Christ, believed in throughout the world. Alleluia.

Offertory Prayer for the Epiphany Season

Merciful Father, the magi brought gifts to your Son, the Babe of Bethlehem. Graciously accept our gifts, given to glorify and worship Christ our Savior, and to bring healing and hope to the people he came to redeem. Amen.

Post-Communion Prayer for the Epiphany Season

Gracious heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of your dear Son, given to us in this holy Sacrament. Strengthen us, through this gift, in faith toward you, and in fervent love toward one another.  This we ask in the name of your Son Jesus Christ, our Light and our Life. Amen.

Sending Words for the Epiphany Season

Go in peace. Share the light of Christ. Thanks be to God.

Hymn of the Day: My version of the Benedictus, “Bless Israel’s God” (sung to “O Zion, Haste”)

  1. Bless Israel’s God; he has redeemed his people:

Raised up a Savior born from David’s line;

Promised of old, through prophets’ proclamation,

To save from deadly foes with pow’r divine;

Promised to show our fathers mercy sure;

Promised his covenant forever shall endure.

  1. Through Abraham, God swore an oath to save us

From hands of foes, to serve him fearlessly

In holiness and righteousness before him,

There to adore and bless him constantly.

You, child – God’s prophet, go before his face,

Give saving knowledge of forgiveness and God’s grace!

  1. Tenderly, God bestows his love and mercy,

His heav’nly Dayspring shines upon our plight.

Darkness and death no longer can confound us:

In paths of peace, he guides us by his light.

Glory to Father, Son, and Spirit – Lord

God who through the ages ever is adored!

My soul magnifies my God and my true Lord,

My Savior, my joy, by my spirit adored!

He looks upon me, though servant most lowly

With favor and grace. O, praise God most holy!

Now all generations shall call me blessed,

Great things God has done for me: I confess it!

Almighty and holy, to all who fear him,

His mercy he grants, to draw them near him.

But his mighty arm refuses and scatters

The haughty and vain, the proud and their matters.

The high and the mighty, God shall dethrone,

But lift up the poor and needy alone.

The hungry are fed from God’s hand, with his bread,

But he sends away the fortunate, unfed.

He helps Israel, his servant of old,

For his promised mercy now shall unfold.

To forefather Abraham, and to his seed,

God promises help and mercy in their need.

Give glory, therefore, to Father and Son,

And to Holy Spirit, while ages run!

Devotion for Wednesday, November 13, 2024

“Immediately afterward He compelled the disciples to get into the boat and to go ahead of Him to the other side, while He sent the crowds away.  After He had sent the crowds away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray; and when it was evening, He was there alone” Matthew 14:22-23).

Do you go to places where you can be alone to pray?  How often are we distracted by the constant noise of this world?  Jesus teaches us to have intentionality so that we are not constantly distracted.  If you know what it is like to set aside time for something special, how about making it a regular routine to set apart time to spend with the Lord?  We need time to commune with the Lord.

Lord, I do know how to carve out time for doing what I love to do.  Teach me to carve out time for you.  I say I love You.  Help me learn how to spend time with the One whom I say I love.  Let me not be distracted by anxiety or concern, but just spend some time with You.  You know where the diversions are in my life.  Help me to come out of the uncertainties of this age to feel Your presence and purpose regularly.

Lord Jesus, by Your example, help me to be regular in devoting time to spend with You.  Help me to not get caught up in the hurried nature of this world.  Lead me in Your goodness and mercy to know that in You I have hope upon hope.  Lead me this day in Your mercy and goodness to do what is needed, beginning with taking time throughout the day to commune with You, my Lord and Savior.  Amen.

Devotion for Tuesday, November 12, 2024

“And they all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up what was left over of the broken pieces: twelve full baskets.  There were about five thousand men who ate, besides women and children” (Matthew 14:20-21).

Our Lord satisfies the hungry heart.  He provides for all our needs.  The Lord does this for billions of people every day, but we often give it no thought.  The Lord has promised salvation which comes by living a life of faith.  Everything you know and experience either leads to a deepening relationship with the Lord or else drives you farther into yourself and apart from the Lord.

Lord, You know me better than I know myself.  You know where my doubts and fears reside.  Guide me, Lord, to live into the new life You give me knowing that only in You will I become what You will make of me.  Remove the hindrances from my heart so that I continue the Gospel road that You have set before me.  I have already experienced the greatest miracle in being given Your grace, mercy, and love.

Lord Jesus, You have come to rescue us from this world of constant rebellion.  Guide me in the upward call You have given me.  Lead me today through all the obstacles that will come and help me to look to You for all things.  You are more than able to provide all that is needful.  Help me to move outside of myself and serve others in the way I would want to be served.  Amen.

Devotion for Monday, November 11, 2024

“And ordering the crowds to sit down on the grass, He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looked up toward heaven. He blessed the food and breaking the loaves, He gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds” (Matthew 14:19).

The disciples were not in the place to ponder what the Lord was doing, they just did what He said and started passing out food.  Sometimes the Lord will have us do something we understand and in the midst of it, do something we do not understand, even miraculous.  Begin the task with humble submission and do what the Lord gives you to do.  Learn to obey all that the Lord commands.

Lord, You know that I have a stubborn independent streak that runs deep within me.  Like a small child, I swat Your hand away and say, “I can do it myself.”  I often do not know what I am doing, let alone know how to do what needs to be done.  Teach me to trust You in and through all things that I may be faithful to Your command.  Take me away my doubt to understand truly that with You, all things are possible.

Lead me, Lord Jesus, through this day You have set before me.  What is past is gone and what lies before me is another day of learning how to be faithful to You.  Abide in me that Your love may pour out of me for others who are around me.  Lead me in Your goodness to do what needs to be done, even if I do not fully understand what You are doing.  Guide me today in Your grace to be a person acting by Your direction, doing what You give me to do.  Amen.

Devotion for Sunday, November 10, 2024

“But Jesus said to them, “They do not need to go; you give them something to eat!”  They said to Him, “We have nothing here except five loaves and two fish.”  And He said, “Bring them here to Me” (Matthew 14:16-17).

“All we have Lord, is this.”  How often do we look at the limitations and think to ourselves that there is no point?  Our Lord has set up such circumstances to deepen our faith.  Do we really believe and know that with God all things are possible?  God created everything.  What is impossible for Him?  Listen to the direction of the Lord.  If he tells us to bring something, then bring it.  It is not always easy to learn how to obey all that the Lord commands.

Lord, I often have doubts.  But what do those doubts have to do with Your ability?  Teach me wisdom so that in all circumstances I look to You to lead me to be a part of what You are doing.  I may not understand, but You do.  You will work all things together through me if I will turn to You and trust that You are the God who can do all things through me.  When You tell me to do something, help me to obey.

Lord Jesus, with You, all things are possible.  Help me this day to be rid of my unbelief so that I humbly do as You command.  Guide me in Your goodness and mercy to be charitable with others as You have been charitable with me.  When confronted with what I think is impossible, teach me to pray, trusting in Your provision.  Help me to know that if You direct me to act on what I think impossible, help me do so knowing that You can do it.  Help me to act boldly by Your direction.  Amen.

Devotion for Saturday, November 9, 2024

“Now when it was evening, the disciples came to Him and said, “This place is secluded and the hour is already past to eat; send the crowds away, so that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves” (Matthew 14:15).

We often look for the most expedient way to take care of a problem.  What will Jesus do?  Sometimes, the least obvious solution is what the Lord has in mind.  Do not go to the Lord with Your solution, come to Him and ask what He would have You do.  We are being taught the simple truth that He alone is Lord of all.  Have a willingness, when you come in prayer, to listen to all of the commands of our Lord.

Lord, I often want to do the easiest thing, but without Your guidance, how can I know what You would have me do?  Lead me beyond myself so that I am willing to listen to all that You command.  Guide me in Your goodness and mercy to learn how to listen.  Grant me compassion for others such that I seek to serve them in their need as You have always served me in my need.

Lord Jesus, I know that what I accomplish in this life is nothing compared to what You are doing in and through me.  Keep this thought always in my mind so that I turn to You for all things.  Guide me this day to do what You would have me do, even if it is inconvenient or even beyond my comprehension, knowing that with You all things are possible.  You are Lord.  Help me to live knowing that You are the Master, and I am Your servant.  Amen.

Devotion for Friday, November 8, 2024

“Now when Jesus heard about John, He withdrew from there in a boat to a secluded place by Himself; and when the people heard about this, they followed Him on foot from the cities. When He came ashore, He saw a large crowd, and felt compassion for them and healed their sick” (Matthew 14:13-14).

We all mourn for the loss of family and friends. Did Jesus withdraw to mourn? We do not know. Fully man, this world troubled Him as well. Yet, in His compassion, He did not stay by Himself but met the crowd and loved them. We have this example to remind us to not withdraw into ourselves, but to always be willing to be compassionate to others. This world is filled with those who long to meet Jesus.

Lord, grant me the ability to remember that our time here is short and that every moment provides an opportunity to share the Good News of salvation with others. Lead me in Your way of compassion so that I may have a willingness to share Your compassion even when I do not feel like it. Guide me in all the steps of this life so that, like You, I am willing to move beyond my feelings and do what needs to be done.

Without You, Lord Jesus, this would be impossible. Through the Holy Spirit which is in me, guide me to always take every opportunity to be gracious, compassionate, merciful, and kind to others. By Your grace, forgive me when I ignore what needs to be done, but always bring me to repentance to sustain the hope within me as I live this life which You have given me. Lead me on the narrow path. Amen.

The Reformers of St. Paul’s Evangelical, Brenham, Texas – Our Story to Disaffiliate from the ELCA

Editor’s Note: Our prayers and words of thanks go to the Reformers group of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.  They have been tireless in their efforts and courageous and faithful in their witness.

The “Reformers” are a group of members from St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Brenham, Texas,  who began to meet to discuss the need for more Biblical enrichment during services and the lack of engagement among members:  attendance being down; no adult or children’s Sunday School; financial struggles of the church; the lack of involvement by a broader group of members, primarily because of not being asked to serve in leadership roles like church council or key committees. Our concerned group sought the truth, transparency and a dialogue about our church’s and the ELCA’s missions, impacts, and beliefs in the Holy Scripture.  Our group leaders met with our church council leaders first to discuss issues and then with the council, but our requests to bring these issues to the congregation were denied.  Without our leadership’s support, we petitioned, according to our constitution, to hold a congregational meeting to vote on a resolution to call a vote to terminate our affiliation with the ELCA. (This meeting must be called in order to have a discussion and inform the congregation of our findings.) The meeting date was determined by the council, and we had 27 days once notified to inform the congregation. We held four meetings and presented researched and referenced documentation, sent out mailers with documentation, and posted our full story and timeline on Facebook. (“The Reformers of St. Paul’s, Brenham”) Total votes cast were 393, with 158 for disaffiliation, 235 against disaffiliation, and 15 denied and given provisional ballots. In summation, 40% wanted to leave, but with 2/3 or 263 votes required for the first vote, the process ended. There were 677 confirmed members before. Latest numbers are unknown. Since the vote, the council sent members an email naming only singular nominees for important positions, and council adopted new resolutions for membership.

Following are actions of our synodical bishop, church council, and pastors to control the process and outcome:

  • Our pastors each preached sermons—despite not meeting with us to discuss issues first—about a group dividing the church and spreading rumors and lies.
  • Council and pastors stalled actions they were required to take according to our constitution.
  • We asked for a membership list at different times and received inaccurate and not up to date information. Members had been removed without following our constitution. New members were added. There were no membership processes or actions made known to the congregation.
  • We were told the “voting member” list would be used, despite the “voting member” list not being used previously for quorum at yearly congregational meetings. The church leadership determined the “voting member” list. We asked for the list, but were denied. Basically, it was a secret list seen only by ELCA church leadership.
  • Contrary to keeping the voting member list secret, the qualifying petition signed by members and presented to council was made available to members outside of the council. Petitioners were called or visited by leadership, retired St. Paul’s /ELCA pastors (7+ are members), and supporters to sway them.
  • The Interim Lead Pastor sent an email “Church Rumors and the Eighth Commandment” to the congregation. It contained partial truths and warned against “false and misleading” information.
  • The council denied our request to hold informational meetings on our own church property.  Many members did not want to be seen or were intimidated to not attend our meetings since we were denied access to church property despite being members.
  • Senior citizen members attending a “Game Day” fellowship event–elder members worship, communion, dominoes/cards, and dinner –were confused to believe if they voted for disaffiliation, they would no longer be members or be Lutheran, and would have to leave our church.
  • The ELCA leadership did not allow comparisons to other Lutheran affiliations or an examination of the ELCA.
  • At the informational meeting with our synodical bishop, our questioning members were cut off, our information laughed at, and attendees commented “why don’t you just leave.” No attempt was made for this to be a fair discussion.

In summation, we were thwarted in our efforts to get accurate member information, and to give all members information needed to make an informed choice about the ELCA. The  ELCA leaders controlled the process and changed the rules as we went. Assumptions and accusations were spread about our group and documentation.

Concerning the work of the Commission for a Renewed Lutheran Church, our synodical bishop denied knowing of the existence of the DEIA audit and report until recently, and minimized the significance of the audit stating “And none of it’s going to be implemented at all.” He said it has nothing to do with the CRLC, even though the CRLC talks about it in written summaries of their meetings: Commission for a Renewed Lutheran Church – Evangelical Lutheran Church in America  All this was said in spite of the fact that the ELCA Conference of Bishops recently issued a statement about the need to speak the truth, rather than normalize lies and deceit: ELCA Conference of Bishops Analyzes Churchgoing Trends in Planning for Future – ELCA.

Devotion for Thursday, November 7, 2024

“He sent word and had John beheaded in the prison. And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother. John’s disciples came and took away the body and buried it; and they went and reported to Jesus” (Matthew 14:10-12).

The wicked delight in wickedness. They carry out their schemes and like all of us, meet death and leave everything behind. The righteous, like John, may receive dishonor in this life, but Jesus said there was no one born of women greater than John. John’s disciples told Jesus, for the lesser goes to the greater. This sinful world may perplex us, but the Good News has conquered death.

Oh death, where is thy victory? Oh death, where is thy sting? Through the Gospel we are called to know that because Jesus lives, we too shall live. What kind of life should you live knowing these things? The world spends a few decades gathering, only to have it all quickly dispersed amongst those who take up the call to gather. We are called to give away and watch as the Lord gathers His own.

Lord Jesus, there are many sad things that happen. Yet, You are weaving together the bride, Your church, as the righteous ones. No matter the indignities this world may heap upon us, Your presence and promise in us is greater. Lead me to see things as they are and trust You above all things. Guide me in Your goodness and mercy to be compassionate even to those who do such wickedness. Amen.
