Pentecost 2- Labor Day Weekend, Cycle B

(June 2 – September 1, 2024)

Please note: A few WOV numbers are missing, as I was doing this on vacation and forgot that hymnal!

NOTE: LBW – Lutheran Book of Worship (The Green Book)

WOV – With One Voice (The Blue Book)

ELW – Evangelical Lutheran Worship (The Cranberry Book)

LSB – Lutheran Service Book (The Maroon Book)

There are versions of some hymns that are superior in LSB and I recommend using them if possible. Also, there are some superb hymns in LSB that aren’t available in the other hymnals. When I suggest one of the latter, I try to include an alternative from LBW or WOV. I recommend that a license and DVD of downloadable hymns from LSB be purchased if you are looking to expand your hymnody. There are, in ELW, some familiar hymns that have been drastically altered, which I try to note. ELW also has some fine hymns not available in the other hymnals, or has, interestingly, a more “traditional” translation or harmonization.

Color for the day is indicated for each Sunday. Primary liturgical calendar taken from Sola Publishing (www.solapublishing.org), based on LSB. Also, I include the lessons from the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) found in ELW and used in some congregations. It often overlaps the Sola/LCMS calendar lectionary, but when there are differences, I will note them.

Because some of the prayers of confession, as well as offertory and post-communion prayers, provided on certain resource pages lack theological heft or linguistic elegance, I have added some seasonal prayers that you are free to cut, paste, and revise as needed. They are modified from the copyright-free Online Book of Common Prayer, or are my own creation. These are found on the following pages. The regular prayers of intercession will, as usual, be provided weekly in their own Word documents.

For General/Green Season Use: A Brief Order of Confession and Holy Absolution

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son+, and of the Holy Spirit: Amen.

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Silence may be kept.

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. For you are the source of light and life, you made us in your image, and called us to new life in Jesus Christ our Lord; who on the first day of the week overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who forever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

For General/Green Season Use: The Eucharistic Prayer

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself, and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, with praise and thanksgiving. Recalling our Savior’s death, resurrection, and ascension, we pray that you would sanctify these gifts by your Holy Spirit, to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and forever. AMEN.

And so, Father, we bring you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Almighty and ever-living God, thank you for feeding us with the most precious Body and Blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ. Thank you for assuring us that we are living members of the Body of your Son, and heirs of your eternal kingdom. Send us out to do the work you have given us to do. Props: Disciples and boat. You will need the egg carton and the eggs labeled with the names of the disciples. You will also need bookmarks, one for each child. These are simple to make. Simply print the following on a long strip of cardstock. You can laminate, add ribbon, stickers, or an image from the computer on the bookmarks, or you can keep them simple with just the text. You may want to think about giving bookmarks to all members of the congregation as well.

Jesus cares about me.

Jesus gives me peace.

Jesus stills me.

Jesus calms me.

Jesus protects me.

Jesus gives me faith.

Because of Jesus, I don’t have to be afraid.

All of creation obeys Jesus.

Jesus loves me.

Pastor: Good morning boys and girls! Welcome! Let’s say good morning to our friend Sammy and see if she is there. Ready? One, two, three: Good morning, Sammy!

Sammy: Good morning, everyone! Pastor, let’s get out the disciples and their boat.

Pastor: Who here has seen the ocean or the bay before? What is the ocean/bay like?

Sammy: I love it when Farmer Mark takes me to the ocean.

Pastor: Farmer Mark takes you to the ocean, Sammy?

Sammy: I get around, Pastor.

Pastor: Our gospel reading today is about how Jesus calmed the sea.

Sammy: What happened?

Pastor: Jesus and his disciples were on a boat and Jesus was so tired that he fell asleep in the stern of the boat?

Sammy: What’s a stern?

Pastor: The stern is the back of the boat. Jesus fell asleep and the wind blew and the waves crashed against the boat. Then the boat began to fill up with water.

Sammy: Oh no! That sounds bad. Jesus had to be awake for all of that.

Pastor: He slept through everything.

Sammy: Boys and girls, why do you think Jesus slept through the bad storm with the wind and the waves and the water in the boat?

[Allow time for responses]

Pastor: Great answers, everyone! The disciples did wake Jesus up, and they said, “Jesus, don’t you care about us?” And Jesus told the wind and the waves to be still, and the storm stopped right away.

Sammy: Just like that?

Pastor: Everything was quiet. And Jesus asked his disciples two questions: “Why are you afraid?” and “Have you no faith?”

Sammy: There are many important things for us to remember about this passage from Mark.

Pastor: Well, I have a little gift for everyone. I have a bookmark for you all to remember Jesus’s promises to us based on this story. What does the bookmark say?

Jesus cares about me.

Jesus gives me peace.

Jesus stills me.

Jesus calms me.

Jesus protects me.

Jesus gives me faith.

Sammy: Good morning, everyone! Hey Pastor!

Pastor: Yes, Sammy?

Sammy: Do you have a garden?

Pastor: Yes I do. I have a few vegetables growing.

Sammy: Do you have mustard in your garden?

Pastor: I do not.

Sammy: Oh. Okay.

Pastor: What’s the matter, Sammy?

Sammy: Well, I was listening to you read the gospel for today, and I heard about the mustard seed. I heard you say that if you look really closely at the mustard seed, you can see heaven.

Pastor: Is that what I said?

Sammy: Yes!

Pastor: I don’t think so, Sammy. I don’t think the gospel says that, Sammy. I think you got confused.

Sammy: Hang on, Pastor. Boys and girls, do you remember what Pastor said this morning about the mustard seed?

[Allow time for responses]

Sammy: Okay Pastor, you may share with us what you said about the mustard seed.

Pastor: The gospel says that the kingdom of Heaven is like a mustard seed. If you plant a mustard seed, the plant grows and spreads quickly, and it becomes so strong, that even birds can nest in its branches. In fact, I would like to show you all what a mustard seed looks like.

[Show mustard seed to children]

Sammy: That’s really small!

Pastor: Yes it is, and Jesus says that even with this little bit of faith, we can do great things.

Sammy: I love that!

Sammy: Good morning, everyone! Hey Pastor, do you have any brothers or sisters?

Pastor: Yes I do. I have a brother, and I have a brother-in-law and a sister-in-law.

Sammy: What is an in-law?

Pastor: It’s someone you are related to by marriage.

Sammy: Oh! So when you get married, do you get extra siblings?

Pastor: Sometimes, Sammy. I guess it works like that if the person you are marrying has brothers or sisters.

Sammy: I am an only lamb.

Pastor: What do you mean, Sammy?

Sammy: My maamaa and daddy just have me. That’s it. I have lots of cousins and aunts and uncles and friends and neighbors—

Pastor: Hang on a second, Sammy.

Sammy: Yes, Pastor?

Pastor: Did you know that you actually do have brothers and sisters?

Sammy: I do?

Pastor: Yes you do.

Sammy: Well where are they?

Pastor: They are right here.

Sammy: [looking around] Pastor, you are trying to pull the wool over my eyes.

Pastor: No, really, Sammy. Because of Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit, all believers become brothers and sisters in Christ.

Sammy: What does that mean?

Pastor: That means that you have a lot of brothers and sisters. Everyone here is a brother or sister to you. We are a family—God’s family—and we have to take care of each other and love each other as God loves us.

Sammy: Woah that is really cool, Pastor. I like that I have a family here with all of the boys and girls.

Pastor: Me too. We are going to pray; let’s bow our heads and fold our hands. Dear Jesus, Thank you for my family. Thank you my friends. Thank you for my brothers and sister in Christ. And thank you for the church. Amen.

Pastor: Good morning boys and girls! Welcome! Let’s say good morning to our friend Sammy and see if she is there. Ready? One, two, three: Good morning, Sammy!

Sammy: Good morning, everyone! Pastor, I have a story for all of the boys and girls today.

Pastor: Oh I love stories!

Sammy: Me too! This story was passed down through the generations of my family from my grandma. Well, my great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great—

Pastor: Sammy, I think we get the point. It was a looong time ago.

Sammy: [Pauses] Great-great-great Grandma Baaath-sheep-a.

Pastor: Baaath-sheep-a?

Sammy: What can I say? David named her. She was his favorite ewe.

Pastor: Anyway—what is the story you want to tell us, Sammy?

Sammy: Oh yes! Grandma Baaath-sheep-a told the story about how David and his mighty men were fighting battles and expanding God’s kingdom.

Pastor: The stories of battle are my favorite stories.

Sammy: But this story is not about a battle. David and his men were really hungry. They went to a priest named Ahimelech for shelter and they asked him for some bread. The only bread that the priest had was Bread of the Presence.

Pastor: So Priest Ahimelech only had holy bread. It was bread like we use for communion.

Sammy: Exactly! Grandma Baaath-sheep-a said the bread was really special. Only priests were allowed to eat it.

Pastor: So what happened next?

Sammy: Priest Ahimelech gave David and his mighty men the Bread of the Presence. And they ate it. And then David asked if he could have a weapon!

Pastor: What weapons did the priests have at the temple?

Sammy: You know what’s really cool, Pastor? The weapon that they had at the temple was Goliath’s sword. Goliath was the same man that David brought down when he was a boy. And all these years later, when David needed a weapon, he was able to get one at the temple, and it was Goliath’s sword—one of the best around.

Pastor: God always provides for us when we are in need, Sammy. He gave David bread and a weapon when David needed them.

Sammy: Isn’t Grandma Baaath-sheep-a’s story a good one?

Pastor: It is a good one, Sammy. Jesus talks about this story in the gospel reading today. He talks about how the Sabbath, our day of worship and rest, was made by God for us.

Sammy: What do you mean?

Pastor: The Sabbath is the day where we worship God and we take communion, which is our Bread of the Presence thanks to Jesus. It’s a day where we get to spend time with our families and rest in thankfulness for everything God gives us.

Sammy: Boys and girls, why do you think God made the Sabbath for us?

Pastor: Great answers, everyone. Can we please bow our heads and fold our hands in prayer? Let’s pray: Dear God, thank you for giving us everything we need. Thank you for your life-giving bread. Thank you for church. Thank you for rest. Amen.

Let us come before the Throne of Mercy with our prayers for the Church, the world, and one another.

A brief silence

Dear Father, thank you for the compassion and healing you give us in Jesus! Thank you for your grace, mercy, and steadfast love! Give us the courage and wisdom to share these wonderful gifts with others, especially those who need them the most.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Have compassion on your Church. Heal it from false teaching, unkind acts, and unfaithful witness. Raise it up from sloth and sin. Provide for its needs so it may generously share your grace with others. Make it lovely in righteousness, to draw many people to their Beautiful Savior.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Incline your ear to your persecuted Church, so that they may never despair of your goodness. May they give thanks to you forever for your great mercy. Shield and defend your missionaries, especially when they are met with hostility and rejection.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Fill the people of this congregation with gentleness, generosity, and compassion. Help us reflect Jesus’ goodness to everyone we meet. Let our church becomes a haven of grace to everyone.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Keep this nation under your guiding eye, and knit us together in the common purpose of knowing we are intended to be “one nation under God, with liberty and justice for all.” Bestow wisdom, prudence, and goodness on all earthly rulers, especially in our own land. Inflame them only with the earnest desire to love justice, seek mercy, and walk humbly before you, their Lord and King.

Clothe all who wear the sackcloth of suffering with the clean linen of your salvation and joy. We lift before you the needs of: {List}. O Eternal Father, you are indeed strong to save! Give us faith to cling to your dear Son in every danger that threatens to undo us. We bless and adore you for your strong, saving love!

Still the storms of division, heresy, and ambition among your people. Make your Church an ark of safety against floodwaters of sin and suffering. Make it a rock against which faithless words and evil deeds are dashed. Let many find a refuge there, and turn to you, and be saved.

Like Job, your persecuted servants long to know their suffering has meaning, their faithfulness is precious, and their Redeemer lives. Deliver them from evil. Reveal your mighty arm and never-failing love. And cause their tormentors to repent and believe in you.

Speak your word of peace among the people of this congregation. Keep us steadfast in faith, fervent in worship, and persistent in prayer. Make us tireless in loving service to all are overwhelmed by waves of suffering, sorrow, or shame.

We pray for seafarers, fishermen, our Navy and Coast Guard, and all they protect, defend, and rescue. Still the storms and deliver everyone in peril from wind, wave, and death.

Bestow wisdom and righteousness to our nation’s elected and appointed leaders. Teach them to prize integrity over re-election; justice over special interests; and attentiveness to your will over expediency.

Your Son chided his disciples for their little faith, yet he saved them from the storm. He sent them into a storm-tossed world, to share the Gospel of salvation. Bless everyone, even those of little faith, who strive to share the Lord Jesus with another shipwrecked soul! Lead them to safe harbor in your care.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We pray for all who are overwhelmed by waves of suffering and sorrow; who have been shipwrecked by abuse, abandonment, or injustice; who have been cast adrift in pathless seas of confusion, delusion, or doubt; and who cry out, fearing that you neither hear nor care that they are perishing. Let us come before the Throne of Mercy with our prayers for the Church, the world, and one another.

A brief silence

Father, thank you for having mercy on us, even when we rebel against you. Thank you for sending us your dear Son, to free us from the devil’s tyranny. Thank you for preparing us to bear the weight of your glory in our bodies, hearts, minds, and souls.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Purify and renew your Church. Strengthen all who are baptized to do your will, speak your word, care for your people, and live as true sisters and brothers of Jesus.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Cast out the forces of evil which try to destroy your people. Gather in your care all who are persecuted for naming Jesus as Lord. Soften the hearts of their enemies, so they repent and strive to do your will.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Renew the people of this congregation day by day. Give us generous and willing hearts as we seek ways of serving you and sharing your love with those around us.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Strengthen bonds of affection, respect, and care in all families. Heal those afflicted by discord, abuse, or grief. Help us to believe that in loving you, our heavenly Father, we also draw closer to one another.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Bless and guide the elected and appointed leaders in our nation and communities. Despite the brokenness of creation and the suffering inflicted by sin and evil, give your people a foretaste of the freedom, justice, and peace that only you can bestow.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Equip those who stand harm’s way on behalf of others with courage, wisdom, and skill. Bless all they do which is in accordance with your will. Shield them when they fall, and give patient hope to their loved ones. Bring them home swiftly and safely when their task is done.

We remember before you all who suffer, including: {List}. Refresh them with the healing power of your life-giving Spirit. Help us to minister to them with compassion and patience. Restore them to fellowship with all who love them.

Thank you, dear Father, for our loved ones who have died in your embrace. Grant comfort to all whose grief runs deep. Keep us safely in your Son’s faithful care. Cheer us with your Holy Spirit. Guide our steps and shape our lives in accordance with your will. And give us a joyful reunion with all whom Christ claims as sister and brother, mother, and friend.

Heavenly Father, thank you for inviting us to share your Sabbath rest. Thank you for healing, refreshment, and your own dear presence in your precious Son. By your Holy Spirit, give us grace to cherish the Sabbath and gladly draw nearer to you.

Lord, in your mercy, please hear our prayer.

Make your Church a place of rest and gladness, forgiveness and mission, fellowship and faithfulness. Use it to teach all people words of prayer, praise, and thankfulness.

Lord, in your mercy, please hear our prayer.

Grant refreshment and strength to persecuted Christians and Jews throughout the world. Ease their burdens and soften the hearts of their enemies, for your Name’s sake.

Lord, in your mercy, please hear our prayer.

Adorn this congregation with the beauty of holiness and the glory of Jesus’ amazing grace. Help us invite and lead many friends, neighbors, and family members to share a closer walk with their Savior.

Lord, in your mercy, please hear our prayer.

We remember before you everyone whose work is difficult, dangerous, long, and undervalued in the eyes of the world. We pray especially for those who even this day experience forms of slavery and forced labor. Protect them from harm. Deliver them from evil. Free them from bondage. Grant them a just reward for their work. Help us to work for these great good things, as we are able.

Lord, in your mercy, please hear our prayer.

Give integrity, honor, wisdom, and prudence to our elected and appointed leaders, in this country and throughout the world. Establish them – their thoughts, words, and actions – in righteousness, justice, and truth. Remind them that they shall account for their stewardship of authority and power before you, the Lord of all nations.

Lord, in your mercy, please hear our prayer.

Grant release, refreshment, and healing to everyone held captive to suffering of body, mind, heart, or soul. This day we remember before you: {List}. Deliver them from whatever afflicts them. Let them fulfil the work you would have them do, and rejoice in the rest you bid them share.

Lord, in your mercy, please hear our prayer.

Father, thank you for gathering our beloved dead into the eternal Sabbath of your Kingdom. Refresh and comfort all who are burdened by sorrow. Grant us strength and faith to be workers in that same Kingdom throughout our mortal days. And according to Jesus’ promise, open to us the doors of your heavenly home, where with all the faithful we will rest in your love and where knowing and worshiping you will be our joyous work forever.
