September 2022 Newsletter

Lutheran CORE continues to provide monthly video reviews of books of interest and importance. Many thanks to NALC pastor Mark Werner for giving us a review of Heather Ruesch’s book, Sexuality Mentality: Creating a Culture of Biblical Integrity.
Because we are being bombarded by all sorts of propaganda and lies that the devil uses to deceive and destroy, Pastor Werner feels that we need a book like this one, which views sexuality as a good gift from God which enriches life when people live according to God’s design for healthy relationships. Knowing that many pastors have been worn down and are tired from speaking about sexuality on the floors of synod assemblies, Pastor Werner states that the confessional church is now often too silent and is not speaking the truth in love, particularly in regard to our teenagers. Reminding us that our primary identity is not in our sexuality but in Jesus Christ, Pastor Werner recommends this book as a must read for parents. In addition, it can be used within congregations as youth engage in dialogue with their peers and are able to have honest, faithful conversations with their parents and the pastor. The book is available through Concordia Publishing.
Mark Werner is pastor of Emanuel Lutheran Church in Elmer, New Jersey and is a member of the NALC Executive Council.
This review, as well as eleven others, have been posted on our YouTube channel. A link to the channel can be found here.
Lutheran CORE continues to provide monthly video reviews of books of interest and importance. Many thanks to David Charlton, ELCA pastor and vice president of our board, for doing this month’s video review. His review is about the book, The Genius of Luther’s Theology: A Wittenberg Way of Thinking for the Contemporary Church by Robert Kolb and Charles P. Arand.
Concerning this book Pastor Charlton writes, “Twenty-first century Lutherans are often confused and conflicted about the place of good works, service to the community, and social justice in the Christian life. Kolb and Arand use Luther’s distinction between the Two Kinds of Righteousness to help us find a way to talk about all those things without losing sight of the doctrine of justification by grace through faith in the process.”
These reviews are posted on YouTube. Our YouTube channel, which contains four other reviews, can be found here. Many thanks to Pastor Charlton for having done a previous review, and to LCMC pastor, Chris Johnson; NALC pastor Brett Jenkins; and LCMC pastor Bob Rognlien for making the other reviews.
Our plan is to publish a new video book review during the first week of every month. Many of the books that will be reviewed are described in the List of Confessional Resources on the Seminarians page of our website. That list can be found here.
When you look at a video review for the first time, please click on the Subscribe button. As enough people do that, it will eventually help us to get a channel name that will include our organization’s name.
Recently I was talking with an ELCA seminarian who was saying how much he wished that there was a list of Biblically and confessionally faithful books and other resources. I was very pleased to be able to tell him about the List of Confessional Resources, which can be found on the Seminarians page on our website, www.lutherancore.org. You can also find the Seminarians page by clicking on the hamburger symbol in the upper righthand corner of the website home page. Seeing that list, he said, “That is exactly what I have been looking for.” There you will find a list of and information about such resources as books, commentaries, videos, ministries, and movements that have been recommended by friends of Lutheran CORE.
That resource is now being taken to the next level. We have begun the process of providing video reviews of some of these books on YouTube. Our first book review can be found here. Our YouTube channel can be found here.
Many thanks to Pastor Chris Johnson for making the first review, Pastor Brett Jenkins for making the intro and outro, and Joel Awes for setting up the YouTube channel.

“You have taken account of my wanderings; put my tears in Your bottle. Are they not in Your book? Then my enemies will turn back in the day when I call; this I know, that God is for me.” (Psalm 56:8-9)
The Lord knows the days of our life. He knows what we need long before we ask. He allows all the things that happen to occur for His purposes. Trusting in the Lord is the result of faith and knowing that all things are in His hands is the truth. Come then to the Lord and be not afraid.
Lord, all around me is the evidence of a world that is not quite right. Help me, I pray, to see through the fog of this world the truth of Your Word. Guide me according to Your never-failing principles to walk humbly on the earth knowing that You alone are God of all. Your book is written and in it is that page onto which You have written me. Guide me to live as You would have me live.
Lord Jesus, You are the author and finisher of the faith for all of those who come to You. Lead me to follow and open my ears to speak as You speak that I would be guided by the truth of eternity. Though all around me is chaos, settle my heart to simply trust in the grace You provide knowing that only in You is there hope and a future. May I truly follow You all the days of my life. Amen.
